MHE stands for material handling equipment. It is equipment used to move, handle, or transport materials, goods, or other items. Government of Canada procurement records use the expanded form "Material Handling Equipment" and apply it to machines such as forklifts and pallet inverters.

The term covers both purchases and services. Federal buyers have bought MHE outright, run open requests for proposals for it, and rented it by the month. It appears in general logistics and in defence-support work, where equipment moves materiel between buildings, vehicles, and drop-off points on a military base.

Equipment that Canadian tenders call MHE

The examples in federal records are practical and specific. They include forklifts, forklift rental or leasing services, and pallet inverters. They also include other equipment that moves materiel around a base or facility.

The Department of National Defence (DND) has listed a solicitation on CanadaBuys titled "Major Event 2025 - Material Handling Equipment". The title shows that buyers use MHE as a plain category name for a requirement.

MHE rentals for the British Army Training Unit Suffield

CanadaBuys records a contract titled "W0142-24X012 MHE Rentals". Canada conducted it as agent for the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS). The requirement was to hire MHE monthly so that equipment and materiel could move between permanent buildings, vehicles, and drop-off points within the base.

The contract's listed UNSPSC commodity is 78121604, forklift rental or leasing service. The full record is on CanadaBuys contract history. It shows that MHE can be bought as a service rather than as a product.

National Research Council purchases: a forklift and a pallet inverter

The National Research Council Canada (NRC) has issued two notices that show how MHE is bought as goods. The first was for a Big Joe forklift. The forklift notice classified it under GSIN 24101603 (L-4 Forklifts) within N3900, Materials Handling Equipment. It required equipment that could:

  • lift up to 5,000 pounds;
  • be used daily in different buildings;
  • operate in small areas;
  • work without a fixed charging station.

The second was an open RFP for a GMP pallet inverter for 40-inch by 48-inch pallets, also classified under N3900, Material Handling Equipment. The pallet inverter notice stated that deliverables had to be received by March 31, 2026. It also limited eligibility to Canadian suppliers under the stated Policy on Reciprocal Procurement condition.

Classification codes attached to MHE

Three codes appear in the records. N3900 is the Government of Canada commodity category for Material Handling Equipment. GSIN 24101603 identifies L-4 forklifts within that category. UNSPSC 78121604 identifies forklift rental or leasing services.

The code depends on whether the buyer wants the equipment or the service. A purchase of a forklift and a monthly rental of one are classified differently, even though both are MHE requirements.

What MHE means for a supplier bidding on Canadian public contracts

Read the solicitation closely, because the requirements change with each notice. A supplier may need to provide or rent the specified equipment and meet its technical, safety, capacity, dimension, charging, delivery, or operating requirements. The bid must be responsive, submitted through the specified channel, and received before the closing deadline.

Eligibility and trade conditions also vary, as the Canadian-suppliers-only condition in the pallet inverter notice shows. Search by the N3900 category, the GSIN, and the UNSPSC code as well as the words "material handling equipment", so that both purchases and rentals show up. Past awards and tenders are published in CanadaBuys procurement and contracting data.
